Abstract
The Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) was established within the National Institutes of Health in 1990, in response to the acknowledged need for women to participate directly in medical research. The earliest undertaking was the development of a research agenda to identify and address gaps in our understanding of women's health and to actively recruit women and minorities into clinical studies. As part of its educational outreach efforts, the ORWH coordinates health seminars to share the latest research on health topics of current concern to women. In 1998, the Women's Health Seminar Series, "Women's Health Research for the 21st Century," included the Women's Health Initiative with the focus on hormone replacement therapy and chronic pain conditions, among other topics. With this issue, the Journal of Women's Health & Gender-Based Medicine continues publication of the presentation summaries. The last of the series, "The Future of Weight Management," follows. The ORWH committee members responsible for this seminar are Dr. Judith Cooper and Dr. Sooja Kim.
