Abstract
The Ganoderma genus of polypore mushrooms contains a few dozen species, with Ganoderma lucidum being the most popular and widely studied for its medicinal effects. Ganoderma lucidum contains numerous bioactive constituents, including the triterpenoid ganoderic acid, and β-glucan polysaccharide compounds. These compounds have been shown to have a variety of effects, including an enhancement of antioxidant status and immune function. Ganoderma has also been widely studied in the oncology setting and in cardiovascular disease. This article summarizes clinical studies in these areas and also discusses safety and opportunities for future research.
