Abstract
ABSTRACT
The Second European Conference on Clean Technology addressed itself to the product life-cycle as the organizing theme for examining clean technology opportunities. A distinct effort was made by the program committee to expand the attraction of clean technology beyond the minimization of waste and the conservation of resources, to firmly include the economic value of clean technology in the marketplace. In the Netherlands, and to some degree throughout the European Community, clean technology is being supported by government as an investment strategy for industrial infrastructure development, as well as external market development. A major advantage seen in this approach is the export value of the technology for other parts of the world. The Europeans sense that the development of technologies which conserve resources and minimize the need for waste management will have a high market value and be very competitive globally. Numerous papers discussed herein address issues such as the lingering focus on end-of-pipe waste management, the integral role of product design in waste reduction, and is clean technology new technology or new ways of using existing technology?
