Abstract
ABSTRACT
Most public concern over siting proposals for hazardous waste facilities centers on two sets of questions: what will be its environmental effects and risks for the community, and what will be its economic impacts. This study identifies the main types of economic impacts that may be associated with hazardous waste management facilities, and provides rough estimates of their potential magnitude based upon data for existing facilities. It also describes ways in which adverse impacts have been prevented, mitigated, or compensated in communities that have addressed these issues. The study is based upon a report prepared for the North Carolina Governor's Waste Management Board (1).
