Abstract
ABSTRACT
In these preliminary studies we report on the changes observed in the metal concentrations in the leachates of wood fly ash as a function of leachate pH. We examined three pH levels: 7, 5, and 3. One percent by weight slurry solutions of wood fly ash were agitated, monitored and maintained at a constant pH for a 24 hour interval. The elemental analysis of the solutions obtained was then determined using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The amounts of Si, K, Ca, Mn, Rb, Ni, Ba, Sr, and Zn found in the leachates all increased as the pH of the leaching solutions decreased. These results suggest that further studies be undertaken to determine if wood fly ash should be considered a possible hazardous waste.
