Abstract
To address concerns about the safe use of surgical lasers checklists and safety protocols are needed to cover a laser safety program that should include education about ocular hazards, safety glasses, airborne contaminants, fires, unintended laser-beam injuries, fires, and general surgical complications. Organizations—such as the American National Standards Institute, the Laser Institute of America, the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, and The Joint Commission—are involved in setting standards for the safe use of lasers.
