Abstract
Abstract
Background:
Lipomatous uterine tumors are encountered infrequently, and pure uterine lipomas are extremely rare. A diagnosis of pure uterine lipoma should be made only if the tumor itself does not show the presence of smooth-muscle bundles or does show muscle bundles confined only to the periphery of the tumor.
Case:
A postmenopausal 70-year-old female presented with multiple polyps arising from the fundus. She underwent polypectomy with a preoperative diagnosis of fibroid polyps. Histopathologic examination of the polyps showed mature adipose tissue without any intervening smooth-muscle bundles and with compressed endomyometrial tissue at the periphery. A diagnosis of pure uterine lipomatosis was made.
Results:
The patient was asymptomatic after the polypectomy.
Conclusions:
Knowledge of this entity is essential, as an accurate diagnosis in such cases can obviate the need for surgical intervention and nonoperative management can be offered to the patient.
