Single-Site Laparoscopic Surgery for a Huge Ovarian Mass

Background:

Single-site laparoscopy is accepted in gynecologic surgery. A few published cases of single-site laparoscopy had ovarian masses large enough to be over the umbilicus. This report highlights the technique and outcome of removing a huge 38-cm ovarian mass through a single-site laparoscopic incision.

Case:

A 48-year-old female was examined due to progressive enlargement of her abdomen for 6 months. An axial computed tomography scan confirmed that she had a benign-appearing, 38.3 × 29.5 × 22.4–cm right adnexal mass. The mass was removed through a single-site laparoscopic incision with the aid of drainage by an Endobag. ^tm The operating time was 105 minutes with less bleeding than might have occurred with conventional total laparoscopy.

Results:

This patient's postoperative hospital stay was 1 day. The histopathologic report on her case revealed that she had a benign mucinous cystadenoma.

Conclusions:

Single-site laparoscopy can be performed safely for patients who have large, benign-appearing ovarian masses, with superior cosmetic results and recovery.
