Abstract
Background:
A uterine cyst is a controversial and rare pathologic entity, characterized by being a benign lesion located in the thickness of the uterine myometrium. There are few reports in the literature, and those that are accompanied by histologic descriptions are even less frequent.
Case:
A 57-year-old woman presented with a simple cystic formation of 4.2×3.7 cm, located in the midline of the dome of the uterus, suggesting a simple cyst. After complete excision, histologic examination revealed the presence of a cystic structure lined by tall ciliated columnar epithelium without atypia, showing a well-developed muscular underlying wall. These findings were consistent with a cystic uterus.
Results:
There were no other gross pathologic findings in any other abdominal organs. She was discharged without any incidents the fourth day after surgery.
Conclusions:
This report describes a case of a uterine cyst, reviews some recent literature, and provides a histopathologic and immunohistochemical description, as well as a description of the differential diagnosis of a uterine cyst. Diagnosis of a congenital uterine cyst has complex critera needed to distinguish it from other kinds of cysts. (J GYNECOL SURG 30:53)
