Abstract
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are mesenchymal tumors that arise anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract. In this paper, we present the case of a GIST presenting as an adnexal mass. A 52-year-old woman presented to our gynecologic outpatient department with a pelvic mass that was found during a routine pelvic ultrasound scan. At the subsequent surgery, the mass was found to have arisen from the small bowel rather than from the adnexa, and a small bowel resection was then performed. A histologic investigation confirmed that the mass was a GIST. This case demonstrates the importance of considering a diagnosis other than gynecologic causes for pelvic masses that do not have a classical presentation either clinically or radiologically, as well as the importance of maintaining a close working relationship with the general surgeons when unexpected pathologies are encountered, in order to administer the correct surgical management of the patient's underlying pathology.
