Abstract
Objective: A dissecting forceps with a DeBakey pattern was modified and fitted with an adapter to be used with a high-frequency generator for bipolar coagulation. Results: By activating the electrocautery function using a foot switch, the Muenster Forceps has been used effectively in gynecologic cancer surgery, including procedures for breast cancer treatment. The device proved to be particularly useful for retroperitoneal or axillary lymph node dissections. During 465 surgical procedures within a period of 7.5 years, no major problems were encountered with regard to either inadvertant tissue damage, adherence of tissue material to the DeBakey tips, or thermal damage of delicate structures during dissection. Conclusions: The Muenster Forceps is a simple, low-cost device that combines the advantages of the DeBakey forceps for delicate dissection with those of bipolar coagulation, thus obviating the need of the surgeon to switch frequently between different instruments.
