Myxoglobulosis of the Appendix in a Postpartum Patient

Abstract

A 23-year-old female underwent a cesarean section for breech presentation at term. Her postpartum course was complicated by multiple admissions for pelvic pain presumed to be endometritis. Her symptoms were temporarily alleviated with intravenous antibiotics during each hospitalization. Imaging to evaluate persistent abdominal pain revealed a large cystic right lower quadrant mass adjacent to the ovary. Findings at diagnostic laparoscopy included a 15-cm × 4-cm appendix with pathology confirming myxoglobulosis. This case describes the only reported case of myxoglobulosis of the appendix presenting as a rare cause of pelvic pain in a postpartum patient. (J GYNECOL SURG 20:127)
