Abstract
ABSTRACT
The length of hospitalization in patients after abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy for benign or malignant conditions during the period 1976 to 1997 was analyzed. The study was divided into three periods: 1976–1983 (A), 1984–1993 (B), and 1994–1997 (C). The mean number of abdominal hysterectomies per year was 146.36 ± 22.31 (range 102–183), and that of vaginal hysterectomies was 45.13 ± 21.47 (range 12–74). The mean length (7.97 ± 0.17 days) of postoperative hospitalization for patients during periods A and B who underwent hysterectomy was reduced to 7.53 ± 0.10 days. In period C, a similar statistically significant (p < 0.0001) reduction in mean postoperative hospitalization length was achieved for patients after vaginal hysterectomy (8.02 ± 0.20 vs. 6.61 ± 0.46 days).
