Abstract
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this investigation was to compare 45 patients who had laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomies as outpatient procedures (LAVH OP) with 45 patients, matched for age, who had total abdominal hysterectomies (TAH) performed during the same time period. Data examined included length of time under anesthesia, length of operation, decrease in hemoglobin, estimated blood loss, weight of the uterus, total cost of hospitalization, length of hospital stay, and the number of days until the patient was able to return to a normal activity level. There were 3 patients who had major complications in the TAH group, but there were no complications in the LAVH OP group. Patients in the LAVH OP group returned to their normal activity levels and work status in less time (23 days) than was needed by the TAH group (40 days) (p = 0.0339). Some TAH can be converted to LAVH outpatient procedures. (J GYNECOL SURG 12:25, 1996)
