Abstract
ABSTRACT
Routine prophylactic oophorectomy for postmenopausal women at abdominal hysterectomy is standard practice but, unfortunately, not when hysterectomy is performed by the vaginal route because the surgeon is apprehensive about technical difficulties. Gynecologists today are stretching themselves to add three or four abdominal punctures to perform laparoscopic oophorectomy or salpingo-oophorectomy to assist vaginal hysterectomy but are not willing to learn an additional step to perform oophorectomy or salpingo-oophorectomy at vaginal hysterectomy. Based on extensive personal experience, we present a surgical technique of vaginal oophorectomy at vaginal hysterectomy, in the hope that more vaginal surgeons will master this simple surgical step. Potential problems and difficulties are identified, with suggested solutions. (J GYNECOL SURG 10:197,1994)
