Abstract
ABSTRACT
The aim of this study, carried out on 98 patients affected by stress urinary incontinence who underwent a Burch colposuspension, was to evaluate if postmenopausal hormonal deprivation and low urethral closure pressure are risk factors that could compromise the surgical outcome. We divided the patients into two groups: group A: 38 patients in menopause, group B: 60 premenopausal patients. After surgery, 17 (17.3%) patients had a persistent genuine stress incontinence, 11 patients (28.9%) in group A and 6 patients (10%) in group B. The difference in the failure rate between the two groups was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Furthermore a low urethral closure pressure in postmenopausal women represents an adjunctive risk factor for the relapse of stress urinary incontinence. (J GYNECOL 9:25, 1993)
