Abstract
ABSTRACT
One hundred twenty-seven patients who had been disease-free for 1 year after CO2 laser ablation for low-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (condyloma/CIN grade I) and high-grade CIN II and III were followed for 1–6 years, with a mean of 3.5 years. The estimated recurrence rate in this series of women was 3 per 100 over a 5-year period (confidence interval 0.67–24.4 per 1000 women/year). Overall, 2 patients had recurrences, 1 with high-grade CIN (grade II) in the fourth year and 1 with low-grade CIN (condyloma/CIN I) in the sixth year of annual surveillance. Recurrences were not related to the histology of the initially treated lesion. Laser ablation appears to be an effective cytodestructive method for the conservative management of appropriately selected cases of CIN, irrespective of their histologic grade.
