Abstract
ABSTRACT
The cytologic smears from 100 patients with a diagnosis of cervical condyloma made on colposcopically directed biopsy were reviewed. Smears were obtained at the time of colposcopic examination, before biopsy. In 48 patients, a diagnosis of condyloma could not be made cytologically; 18 patients had negative smears, and in 30, there was evidence of squamous atypia. In the remaining patients, cytologic changes diagnostic of condyloma were present; however, coexisting cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) was frequently underestimated. It is concluded that cervical cytology is often negative in patients with condyloma. Data regarding the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection based on cervical cytology should be accepted with caution.
