Abstract
ABSTRACT
Recent investigations have found a strong association between cigarette smoking and various neoplasms, including vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia. There are six possible mechanisms which may link cigarette smoking to neoplastic transformation. In 93 women with VIN, cigarette smoking was indicated as an etiologic factor in 56 women. This figure was more than twice the number expected. These women presented with VIN at a younger age. The percent of cigarette smokers within our patient group with VIN is nearly the same as that reported among female smokers with cervical carcinoma and male smokers with lung carcinoma. Cigarette smoking must be considered as a risk factor for VIN.
