Abstract
ABSTRACT
The records of 115 postmenopausal women with abnormal cervical cytology were studied. All were over the age of 50. Fifty-nine percent were colposcoped. The squamocolumnar junction could not be fully visualized in 59% of those age 50–52 and in 72% of those above the age of 52. Sixty-five women with grade 3 cytology were followed up for >12 months. Of these, 32 had no histologic assessment and reverted to normal cytology. Of the remainder, 40% showed normal histology, 43% had cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and 17% had invasive malignancy. Of those with grade 4 and 5 cytology, 72% and 95%, respectively, had either CIN or invasive disease.
