Abstract
ABSTRACT
Sixty-five women with biopsy-proven human papillomavirus (HPV) infection of the cervix only were treated with cryotherapy. The planned length of follow-up was 12 months, although only 20 patients were followed for this period of time. Seventeen patients were followed for only 8 months, and 28 patients for 4 months only. Cure rates at 4, 8, and 12 months were 71%, 65%, and 75%, respectively. Only 1 of the 5 patients with endocervical disease was cured. Compliance with the use of condoms during the treatment period was not fully evaluable. Results of this study indicate that the use of cryotherapy for treatment of HPV infection of the cervix is less successful than the reported cure rates with the carbon dioxide laser.
