Abstract
ABSTRACT
The meaning and origin of the colposcopic term "abnormal" is explained. Attention is called to benign acanthotic nonglycogenated squamous epithelium (BANGSE), and its significance is discussed. Punctation and mosaicism may be identified in the transformation zone that contains this type of epithelium. In BANGSE, punctation and mosaic arise as a result of epithelial thickness rather than vascular change or cytologic atypia. Thus, the specificity of the colposcopic picture may be relatively low.
