ABSTRACT
Twenty-nine female patients with symptoms of the climacteric were assessed by serum estradiol determinations, lateral vaginal wall cytology, and cervical colposcopic evaluation of the stigmata of hormone deficiency. The colposcopic assessment correlated with vaginal cytology and estradiol level and adoption of a scoring system allowed evaluation by the colposcope that was reproducible and amenable to quantitation. All assessments showed improvement with the administration of hormone replacement therapy, and the squamocolumnar junction became visible in patients in whom it was not previously visible. Colposcopic visualization of the cervix examines the end-organ response to both endogenous and exogenous hormones and may be used as an aid in the management of the climacteric.
