Abstract
Background:
Cases of compound unknown parentage where one or both of an unknown subject's parents themselves have unknown parentage are not uncommon. However, the frequency is unknown due to the absence of published case studies.
Case Report:
I present a case of an adopted male with previously unknown parentage whose biological parents were determined through use of nonidentifying information and traditional adoption search methods. Once the biological parents were determined, the likely parents of the biological father who was also adopted were determined using direct to consumer DNA testing and genealogical research of genetic matches.
Conclusion:
It was possible to identify two candidates as the probable paternal grandparents of the subject. Information about them was shared with the subject along with options for next steps.
