Clinical Outcome and Reoperation After Low-Weight Transurethral Resection of the Prostate *

Abstract

The clinical outcome and reoperation rate after low-weight transurethral prostatectomies are not well documented. Seventy-four consecutive patients who underwent a transurethral resection of the prostate weighing 10 g or less over a 24-month period were evaluated with a preoperative and postoperative comparative symptom score analysis. The overall clinical outcome in these patients was: improvement in 44%, no change in 39% and unfavorable in 17%. Irritative and obstructive voiding symptoms resolved in 32% and 43% of patients, respectively. Reoperations were performed in 23% of the patients. These results are compared with reports of resections of larger glands, revealing a dissimilarity in clinical outcome and resolution of symptoms.
