Abstract
Preoperative intravesical ultrasonography has been used for exact planning of transurethral resection (TUR) of bladder tumors. Recently, we have performed the procedure intraoperatively for the examination of the bladder wall and the residual tumor mass. In our first experiences of 19 patients having different stages of bladder cancer, the method seemed to be advantageous. The radicality of TUR can be increased in cases of stage T2–3a tumors by using ultrasonography as intraoperative control. In advanced bladder tumors, the neoplastic tissue was removed in larger quantities, and a more effective tumor mass reduction could be reached. With the help of intravesical ultrasonography, a more precise operative plan can be carried out in order to avoid complications.
