Abstract
The use of an intraprostatic spiral in men with senile dementia has been dissuaded in the literature. Twenty-six patients with senile dementia and voiding problems secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia were treated with transurethral ultrasonically guided insertion of an intraprostatic spiral. With a median followup of 11 months, the success rate and the number of dislocated and removed spirals are comparable to the results in patients without senile dementia. The intraprostatic spiral is an acceptable alternative to an indwelling catheter in approximately 75% of the patients.
