Abstract
Extraneous echoes on transrectal ultrasonographic images of the prostate may represent artifacts (reverberations, deflections, anisotrophic artifacts, shadowings, enhancements) or interference by gas or feces. Difficulties also may arise through faulty instrument operation. Examples of these and other problems are presented.
