Abstract
The Technomed 2000 Lithotripter utilizes a shock wave generated by underwater spark discharge as its energy source and a freely movable lateral ultrasound arm for kidney stone localization. Patient coupling is by immersion of the flank in a limited water bath. An enlarged ellipsoid with a 22-cm aperture combined with the Diatron generator allows most treatments with intravenous sedation only. To date, 142 patients have been treated in the United States, with 84 (59%) becoming stone free, 35 (25%) being left with residual fragments ≤3 mm, and 23 (16%) having fragments ≥4 mm in diameter. Multiple treatment sessions were required in 15 patients (10.4%). Complications were minimal. The Technomed Sonolith 2000 Lithotripter provides efficient, low-cost lithotripsy with minimal patient radiation exposure utilizing a portable device.
