Abstract
Finding the right data to analyze for effective disease management was among the topics discussed during this year's National Managed Health Care Congress in Atlanta. The Benefits Plan Manager from Delta Air Lines outlined a proactive, preventive mentality now helping tens of thousands of the company's employees. Attendees learned how to differentiate between measuring care expenses versus intensity of care expenses, the latter being especially valuable when chronic disease states are prevalent. Also, spotlighting a handful of characteristics when a patient initially enrolls leads to quick identification of those who need immediate referral to case management. Utilization management review is earning a welcome place in many organizations because managers now are using the data to complement disease management protocols rather than using it punitively.
