Abstract

In the present Advanced Technologies and Treatments for Diabetes (ATTD) Yearbook, an international team of associate editors commented on some of the most important peer-reviewed manuscripts published in scientific journals between July 1, 2018, and June 30, 2019.
It was a difficult task to choose only a limited number of manuscripts to be included in the articles of the present ATTD 2019 Yearbook. Many studies were published in the last year describing clinical investigations of new pharmacological molecules, insulin delivery systems, glucose monitoring devices, and different algorithms developed to close the loop and automatically control insulin delivery. More algorithms and tools were developed to help the medical team during and in-between visits of people with diabetes (PWD) and to enable remote support to them and develop tools for digital/virtual clinic—all with the purpose to help persons with diabetes achieve a better metabolic control. It is a well-established fact that currently most PWD do not achieve their metabolic control goals and new approaches are needed.
It is clear to us that there are many more important manuscripts that were published during this period, but regretfully we were not able to discuss them all.
In their comments the associate editors highlighted the importance of the manuscripts selected, described their limitations (if any), and shed light on the lessons to be learned from them.
We hope that the readers of the ATTD 2019 Yearbook will find the book helpful and stimulating and that they will get a broad view of the field of diabetes technologies, relevant to their clinical life.
We wish to thank our associate editors for their great contribution to this book by sharing their knowledge and expertise, as well as for their valuable time invested in writing their articles of this ATTD 2019 Yearbook.
