Abstract
Since the invention of the laser, there has been considerable concern for the safety of those who either use or are near these sources of spectrally pure high-intensity radiation. The potential hazards either caused by the laser light itself or associated with the operation of laser devices are elucidated and laser safety precautions based on common sense and experience are discussed, especially within the framework of the European Community's effort for homogenization of safety standards and the establishment of training and accreditation procedures.
