Abstract
The scope of this study was to compare the effects of different types of laser radiation on mitotic and phase indices in meristematic cells of Allium cepa L. bulbs. He:Ne (632.8 nm) and Nd:YAG (1060 and 1320 nm) were employed. Mitotic index increased significantly after both types of radiation. With He:Ne, modification of this parameter depends on the time of exposure and the potency of the He:Ne beam employed (5 or 10 mW), whereas with Nd:YAG (3 or 6 J), it does not. Phase indices also were modified by Nd:YAG laser irradiation. The prophase index was increased (although in a nonsignificant manner with 3 J), and the anaphase index was reduced significantly. Probably, these effects are correlated with specific characteristics of laser radiation: coherence and monochromaticity.
