Abstract
Background:
Depending on the type of nutrient deficiency that occurs after bariatric surgery, almost every component of the optic system can be affected.
Case Report:
A 34-year-old male morbid obese patient had biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) in April 2011. The patient presented to our clinic in July 2018 with a complaint of vision loss. All assessments were consistent with retinopathy associated with vitamin A deficiency secondary to BPD. All ocular complaints resolved after 2 weeks of appropriate supplements.
Discussion:
In some of the other similar cases in the literature, symptoms do not seem to improve with oral vitamin A replacement therapy. Accordingly, we think that no matter which layer of the eye is affected, it would be a better approach to start treatment with intravenous (iv) bolus replacement. These patients may require revisional surgery due to severe malabsorption.
