Abstract
Background:
Hypovitaminosis D is common, before and after bariatric surgery (BS). This study was conducted to determine the status of vitamin D deficiency before and 6 months after BS.
Methods:
We performed a retrospective cohort study of 155 patients undergoing BS. These patients had an average body mass index of 42.5 ± 5.6 kg/m2. Information regarding demographic characteristics, blood pressure, and anthropometric indices was acquired through patients' record assessment in the hospital database (IR.sums.med.rec.1398.586).
Results:
After 6 months postsurgery period, serum level of vitamin D was increased significantly from 18.67 ± 11.19 to 24.33 ± 13.25 ng/mL (p < 0.001). Moreover, the results of multivariate regression analyses showed that postoperative serum level of vitamin D was associated with the amount of weight loss and postoperative weight.
Conclusions:
Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is very high among patients presenting for bariatric surgery in Shiraz, Southern Iran, and it persists even after the bariatric surgery, and higher doses of vitamin D supplementation might be essential for morbid obese patients following bariatric surgeries.
