Abstract
Introduction:
A growing body of research has found implications for oral health postbariatric surgery.
Purpose:
To review the literature about the impact postbariatric surgery on oral health.
Main Findings
: The research shows negative effects on oral health, including the effect of nutrient deficiencies on oral healing; dental erosion due to gastroesophageal reflux; and increased risk and severity of dental caries and periodontal disease.
Conclusions:
Clinical practice guidelines for perioperative nutritional, metabolic, and nonsurgical support of the bariatric surgery patient have been updated to help ensure optimal overall health for bariatric recipients; however, oral health has not been included as a component. This review suggests the need to increase awareness of oral health for the bariatric surgery team along with patient education, referral, and addition of oral healthcare providers to the interprofessional bariatric team.
