Abstract
There is a worldwide epidemic of obesity. Medical evidence clearly demonstrates that the only effective treatment for morbid obesity is bariatric surgery. There are four major surgical treatments for morbid obesity: laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic gastric bypass, and laparoscopic duodenal switch. There is much recent interest in obesity as a disease of metabolism. In this review, a comparison is made of the major surgical options in terms of their mechanism of action, advantages, disadvantages, risks, and influences over metabolism.
