The safety movement has brought awareness to the critical events that occur in the handoff of patients from one point of care to another. The purpose of this study was to learn more about the nursing care and safety management needs of morbidly obese patients transitioned to the community with home healthcare. Findings related to adequacy of equipment, staffing, and resources for morbidly obese patients are reported from a survey of home health nurses. The study highlights the accommodations home care agencies make to assure safe care of this population of patients and provides insight into the care transitioning that needs to occur between agencies. Additionally, personal injury and safety issues faced by nurses and nursing assistants working with the morbidly obese in home health are explored.
