Abstract
Assigning numerical codes to a patient's health status is a foreign concept to some medical professionals. Some are aware of this facet of medical care but may not understand some of the nuances. Coders are employed by hospitals as well as physicians in order to obtain reimbursement for services rendered. Documentation is critical to assigning the most accurate code for the patient's situation. It is with great hope that with better understanding of how codes are assigned, a new, mutually beneficial relationship can be formed between those who perform medical services and those who code them.
