The scope of this paper focuses on the review of the role of physical activity in the management
of obesity, particularly as it relates to the promotion of negative energy balance. It also
provides practical strategies for the clinician in helping obese patients to integrate physical
activity into their lives. The overall objective of any weight loss program is to promote a negative
energy balance, either through diet, physical activity, or a combination of both.
The component often overlooked in clinically based weight loss program is physical activity.
The primary objective of the physical activity program is the promotion of weight loss,
body fat reduction, and the preservation of fat-free mass. When developing an exercise prescription
for an obese patient, specific components must be considered. These components
include: Frequency, Intensity, and Duration of Exercise.
