Abstract
Since 1984, we observed the effect of anabolic steroids as treatment for HIV/AIDS related wasting conditions and its effect on the CD4+ T-helper cell/CD8 suppressor cell counts of eight HIV/AIDS patients. We observed an apparent increase in lean body weight and an increase or stabilizing effect of the CD4 T-helper cells. We also observed an increase in appetite and an overall positive sense of well-being. Most patients were on 8- to 12-week cycles of anabolic steroids and patients were asked to keep personal journals regarding their scheduled use and dosages. We did not observe any side effects regarding the use of the anabolic steroids except for slight acne in two patients.
