Abstract
In the article "HIV-1 Neutralizing Monoclonal Antibodies Induced by a Synthetic Peptide" by Paul J. Durda et al., on pages 1115-1123 of Volume 6, Number 9, the positive reactivities of MAbs # 5021, 5023, 5025A, 5025B and 5042 with ARV-2 (SF-2) gp120/160 in Western blots may be incorrect. Recent experiments using other lysates of cells infected with HIV-1SF2 did not behave in Western blotting for gp120/160 as the ARV-2 lysate used in the above paper had. In particular there was no Western blot reactivity of MAbs # 5021, 5023, 5025A, 5025B and 5042 with ARV-2 (SF-2) gp120/160 in these more recent experiments. Only MAb 2549 made to the constant region sequence of gp120 aa's 475-486 generated bands with gp120/160 in SF-2 lysates. The reasons for the observed discrepancies are unknown, but it is possible that the ARV-2 (SF-2) lysate used for the experiments presented in the above paper was contaminated with another isolate or alternatively the ARV-2 isolate has mutated in the V3 loop during culture.
