Abstract
Background:
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an acute respiratory infectious disease that is highly contagious and has a high mortality rate. It becomes a primary health problem that affects global economy and social behavior. Currently, there is no specific treatment or vaccine available.
Objective:
The purpose of this article was to review the evidence in the literature relating the potential effects of acupuncture in COVID-19.
Results:
A large number of studies discussed medications, which could treat COVID-19, but there is no specific treatment available. Acupuncture is a nonpharmacologic intervention, complementary treatment with a simple procedure, safe and low cost. Acupuncture can improve immune system, minimize inflammatory response, and control risk factors and comorbidities in COVID-19.
Conclusions:
Acupuncture has been recognized to be a complementary treatment to COVID-19, but further research is needed to assess the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for COVID-19 cases.
