Abstract
As with so many chronic degenerative diseases seen in modern society, prostate cancer presents a daunting challenge to the clinician. The multifactorial nature of the disease makes effectively addressing it difficult. Natural medicine has much to offer both in terms of prevention of prostate cancer, treatment of patients with early and late-stage disease, and adjunct treatment of patients with advanced disease.
Botanical and other hormone modifiers include: Serenoa repens (saw palmetto) fruit; Prunus africanum (pygeum) bark; Urtica dioica (stinging nettle) root; Glycine max (soy) bean; Trifolium subterraneum (subterranean clover) herb; formulas PCSPES 1 & 2; Vitex agnus-castus (chaste tree or vitex) berries; Chamaelirium luteum (false unicorn root) root; Mitchella repens (partridge berry) leaf; cholecalciferol (vitamin D); beta-sitosterol; and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA).
Botanical and other immunostimulants and immunomodulators include: Echinacea spp. (echinacea) root and herb; Eupatorium perfoliatum (boneset) root; Eupatorium cannabinum (hemp agrimony) root; Viscum album (European mistletoe) herb; Ligusticum porteri (oshá) root; Baptisia tinctoria (wild indigo) root; Dionaea muscipula (Venus flytrap) herb; Symphytum officinale (comfrey) leaf and root; Eleutherococcus senticosus (eleuthero or Siberian ginseng) root; Panax ginseng (Asian ginseng) root; Withania somnifera (ashwaganda) root; Ocimum sanctum (holy basil) herb; Rhodiola rosea (rhodiola) root; Codonopsis pilosula (codonopsis, dang shen) root; Aralia manshurica (Manchurian spikenard) root; Lentinus edodes (shiitake) mycelium; Coriolus versicolor (turkey tails, yun zhi, cloud mushroom) mycelium; Astragalus membranaceus (astragalus, huang qi) root; Ganoderma lucidum (reishi) mycelium; Ligustrum lucidum (nu zhen zi, privet) fruit; Cordyceps sinensis (cordyceps, dong chong xia cao) mycelium; Panax quinquefolium (American ginseng) root; Picrorhiza kurroa (picrorhiza, kutki) root; zinc; selenium; and Punica granatum (pomegranate) fruit.
Potential antimetastatic agents include: citrus pectin; Camellia sinensis (green tea) leaves; and vitamin A.
Treatment of advanced cancer includes: high-dose melatonin; coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10); and intravenous (I.V.) vitamin C.
