Abstract
Sustainability programs at universities follow surprisingly parallel development tracks, even though each institution offers its own unique set of challenges, goals, obstacles, funding sources, and vision. This paper reflects a comparative analysis of three unique institutions that reflect analogous beginnings. As illustrated here by the authors, most sustainability programs already underway rely upon a network of working relationships across the institution while constantly adjusting to an iterative process of review and learning. This paper serves as a guide for new sustainability professionals embarking on the initial stages of program development. It outlines 10 steps that are intended to be iterative in nature, in an effort to delineate the common approaches to institutionalizing comprehensive sustainability programs.
