Abstract
Wound healing involves a complex interplay of biological events. During healing, a wound goes through five phases: coagulation, inflammation, proliferation, wound contraction, and remodeling. Hypertrophic scar and keloid interest us because of their aesthetic and functional implications. An update in the prevention and treatment of this abnormal scars is presented. Factors related to the surgical technique affect wound healing. We review here the stages of wound healing and how infection, foreign body reaction, hematoma formation, and wound desiccation affect wound healing.
Using the knowledge gleaned from wound healing research, the surgeon should be able to optimize the conditions leading to re-epithelialization or wound closure.
