Abstract
Excision of skin from the submental region with the usual techniques of U-shaped or triangle-shaped excision can result in a dog ear. This is difficult to remove with simple elliptical excision since the wound is transverse and further excision can result in a visible scar. Using the so-called trapdoor technique with a hexagon-shaped excision of skin allows any dog ear to be excised elliptically without exposing the scar, since the ends of the excision parallel the mandible. The method is simple and allows full exposure of the underlying platysma for tightening of the neck with a variety of techniques.
