Abstract
Hypertrophic and keloid scars are unpredictable and may occur in any patient at any time. Keloid scars may be hereditary in nature and occur in 15% of blacks, Asians, and Hispanics. The treatment usually consists of steroid injections, surgery, pressure, silicone gel sheeting, or a combination of these. Newer treatments are discussed. Keloids are difficult to treat and tend to recur in the majority of patients. A unique methods of treating steroid induced fat atrophy is described that consists of the injection of tumescent saline solution which results in rapid reformation of the fatty layer by dissolving the offending steroid crystals and allowing the steroid to be reabsorbed.
