Abstract
Asthma is often selected for disease management programs because of its high prevalence and large economic impact and the frequent failure to provide appropriate patient care and achieve optimal outcomes. Education of patients, caregivers, and health care providers can have a substantial impact on patient quality of life and economic outcomes. Disease management programs with an educational component are a cost-effective way to optimize patient outcomes and minimize the costs associated with asthma and other chronic disease states.
