Abstract
Primary idiopathic omental torsion (PIOT) remains a rare cause of acute surgical abdomen, especially in younger children. The etiology is as yet unknown and the treatment of choice, once diagnosis is established, is resection of the torted omentum. There are two reports of 8 cases of PIOT in children aged less than 6 years, and all patients in the two reports were treated by laparotomy. We report a 5-year-old girl with PIOT in which the diagnosis was made by laparoscopy and the infarcted omentum was resected laparoscopically. This is the youngest case of PIOT treated by minimally invasive surgical means. PIOT is very rare in younger children, but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of right lower quadrant pain.
